Over the summer, a College-hired security firm concluded its investigation of a data breach first reported by the Orient in April.
According to a July 3 story posted on the Bowdoin Web site, "Following a thorough investigation, Bowdoin College has announced that there is no reason to believe that computer files left open on its network have been accessed or misused."
The College notified "approximately 8,000 people in nearly two dozen states" and compiled a site with frequently asked questions about the possible breach of Bowdoin's computer network (www.bowdoin.edu/it/securityfaq.shtml).
In April, a folder in the name of Caitlin Gutheil, the former student health program administrator who departed Bowdoin in March, was left open, exposing files that included student health insurance information and student Social Security numbers.
